Funded by the Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. Supported by Digital Humanities (UCC) and Derivative

Concept Null was approached by the Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon to run an in-depth training course for the realtime software TouchDesigner to expand the skill set of Irish digital artists in the areas of generative visuals and interactive system design.

Scott Robinson and I took on this task and came up with a hybrid model to enable both in-person hands on training with accessible and rewatchable resources. I gave the introductory workshop followed by the ESP32 workshop. The first was a fleshed out version of my initial Introduction to TouchDesigner workshop, covering the basic UI and workflow features while also looking at DATs and scripting for later use. The second was split into two halves: we started with a brief rundown of microcontrollers, their use cases, how they are programmed, with some quick electricity concepts to grasp. We then moved onto getting everyone setup with their ESP’s on their own machines, wiring up the circuit and then got into how to receive the sensor data in TouchDesigner and manipulate it for interesting results and mappings.

The workshop was well received with many participants leaving with a good grasp of the topics covered and a relief to finally getting into TouchDesigner.
